Wire applies end-to-end encryption to communications by default. Content stays protected between participating devices, rather than relying only on encryption between the device and the server.
Messaging Layer Security
Wire uses Messaging Layer Security (MLS), an open standard for end-to-end encrypted group communication. Wire was an initiator and contributor to MLS and has moved its architecture from the earlier Proteus protocol toward MLS, which lets encrypted communication scale efficiently as groups grow. That matters where organisations need both strong encryption and enterprise-scale collaboration.
